Descriptions
Shotoronji carpets or rugs are a type of traditional hand-woven carpet made in the Rangpur region of Bangladesh. They are known for their intricate designs, vibrant colors, and exceptional craftsmanship.
The process of making Shotoronji carpets is a time-consuming and labor-intensive task that requires great skill and expertise. First, the weaver selects the finest quality wool, which is then dyed using natural colors. The wool is then spun into yarn and wound onto a spindle.
Next, the design is drawn onto graph paper, and the weaver sets up the loom with the required number of threads. The weaver then begins to knot the wool onto the warp threads, row by row, using a small hook known as a 'naal'. The knots are tightly packed together to create a dense pile, which gives the carpet its characteristic softness and durability.
Once the weaving is complete, the carpet is cut off the loom and carefully washed to remove any excess dirt or debris. The final step is to trim the pile to a uniform height and add a fringe to the ends.
Shotoronji carpets are highly sought after for their intricate designs, which often feature floral or geometric patterns. The colors used in Shotoronji carpets are also a notable feature, with vibrant shades of red, blue, green, and yellow being common. These carpets are not only functional but also works of art that showcase the rich cultural heritage of Bangladesh.
